What is a 2000 Sierra 5th wheel travel trailer with two slides worth?
Q. slightly used by elderly parents, want to know value for possible sale.

A. Not enough info. How big, how decked out, any damage, where is it at, etc. Take it to a trailer dealer for appraisal or auction it off.

I want to buy a 5th wheel travel trailer to pull behind a newer 3/4 pickup. What are some of the best brands.?
Q. My pickup has a round ball in the center of the bed and proper electrical connections apparenty to pull a trailer of some type before I bought it. What are some of the better brands and features out there? What length of trailer is the best for just a couple? Thanks, Ron My 3/4 ton 2003 Ford pickup has a ball in the center of the bed with reinforcement under the bed. It is apparently for a gooseneck RV camping trailer, and has the appropiate electrical connections for the trailer. I am interested in getting a RV trailer. A. I would look into a Ford or Dodge with a diesel engine. The size of the trailer depends on what you want to have in your trailer. do you need a TV/dvd with satelite? how about a couple of ovens and a microwave oven ? Do you want to camp simple ?Maybe at least 24 feet.

What is the difference & which is easier to tow & back up with: Pop-up, Travel Trailer, or a 5th Wheel?
Q. We are towing a pop-up using our van, we see the trucks out there with traveling trailers and 5th wheels but which one is easier to manuver with?

A. 5Th wheel will always be the easiest, because your pivot point is above or ahead of the rear wheels. As soon as you put the pivot point behind the rear wheels it changes the dynamics. Paul

Is it legal to install a fuel tank in a travel trailer or 5th wheel for use with an onboard generator set?
Q. The fuel tank is a legal gas transfer tank. It's the kind that you can install in the bed of a pickup truck, to transfer gasoline. The trailer will not have the generator running when it's being towed. Please, provide a link to the source of your data.

A. Having towed both a 27' and a 37' travel trailer with an F350, (Powerstroke,) I wouldn't really want to try anything much larger than a 20' with an F150. A friend of mine does it regularly with his F150, but his truck is also a company truck. The fifth wheels that hook to a semi-style connection in the bed of the truck are going to be the massive, heavy travel trailers that are going to put more weight on the truck's suspension and rear axle than a half ton truck is really designed for. It's probably not a good idea to attempt a fifth wheel in anything under a three quarter ton rating. It's not simply a matter of weight, as much as it is of inertia. You have to get the thing moving, which requires a LOT of torque, you need the… [cont.]

That is good... but it will give you a GVRW that is very conservative. What I am going to tell you is by actual experience and NOT what the book says... but you are free to believe the owner's manual if you wish. This is a long argued question and there is NO REAL answer... because there are the morons who will insist they can haul a 12,000 pound fifth wheel trailer with a F150... they can't... but the are too stupid to know it. Category question? I want to ask a question about our 5th wheel trailer...?
Q. ...but I do not know what category to post the question in. It doesnt fit recreation or cars or travel. I am stumped. Maybe you know---we bought our 5th wheel in October and the dealer winterized it for the winter for us. How do we get the antifreeze stuff out of the water pipes in the spring? Do we need to go to a dump site and try to flush it out? I can't imagine that we can drain and flush it out on our lawn or anything. But I think we need to get the antifreeze out first. We don't want to have that mixed with the fresh water for showers and drinking and stuff like that.

A. Yep, just start using the water and when the holding tank is full go empty it

Who makes the best "all around" travel trailer?
Q. Hi, I am looking at purchasing a travel trailer to be my temporary home for the next 6 months. I do not want a 5th wheel, but something I can pull behind my 2003 Ford F150. I have looked at models such as "Jayco, Cardinal, Fleetwood, Keystone, etc.." I would prefer something no more than 10 years old and between 23-30 ft in length. Hoping to pick something up in the $5000 -$6000 range. I've done alot of looking on eBay and there are many to choose from that fit my criteria, but I'm not sure which brand is best as far as quality built, easy to maintain, etc... Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance, RB

A. shasta they are all built like a brick s--- house. though dont pull harder than lighter built campers. older insbrook also, they are canadian built, they are the gulfstream line. jayco and keystone are of the cheaper manufactured campers. trut me i rebuild remodel and trade campers for a living. the shastas are also usually priced cheaper and built better than most.

What is a good truck to tow a trailer with?
Q. My wife and I are going mobile for the next year while she travels for med school. We are looking at purchasing a truck to haul a 28' camper trailer (not 5th wheel) and want to spend at most around $6000. We will be traveling from Portland to Alaska to New Mexico to Idaho and beyond, easily 15k miles of towing in less than a year. In addition, mileage will increase because this will be our day to day vehicle for the two months we are in each location. Any suggestions or comments would be super helpful!
Asked by justin - Fri Feb 19 12:21:25 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You'll need a 1 ton dually to handle the weight of 28' trailer. Chevy. GMC, Dodge or Ford make really good 1 tons for towing. The Chevy/GMC transmission has the best write up of the group and their later model trucks come with a trans temp gauge as standard equipment. A diesel engine will give you better gas mileage on long stretches. But they also work the hardest on up grades and tend to lose speed if the grade is too steep or too long. Also, diesels are harder to start in cold weather. Since you'll be traveling to Alaska where there is very high elevations and extreme cold and Idaho can also get very cold, I'd recommend a gas engine. You'll be grateful you have one when you're climbing up all those steep grades.

Alas it didn't work out by the time we were ready to take off I had become terminally sick, hubby has a bad back problem. So if I were you I would do it now while you can as you have no idea whats ahead and only having the 1 child, home schooling is good for her while travelling she will learn so much. But your wife is right you will ever own your own home

A. No your not crazy just adventurous. You seem to have the same dream we did sooo many years ago but we were going to do it in retirement.

What is the problem with Duramax Chevy Diesels?
Q. Is there a problem with Chevy Diesels? In general the 2002 to 2006 Range. I live in South Carolina and do a lot of camping. I check out the heavy duty diesels that are pulling the huge Travel trailers and 5th Wheels and 90% of the trucks I see are Dodges and Fords and only about 10% are Chevy/GM. I m in the market for a used diesel truck. I like the looks and room of the Chevy but is there something wrong with their Duramax Diesel engine or drive train?

A. They stink!! Ford's are more refined as vehicles. They are smoother, more comfortable, quieter, and longer lasting. GM has gotten better over the years, but they fall short of the mark, in my book anyway.
