I live in a 5th wheel travel trailer. No hot water coming out of shower?
Q. I live in a 5th wheel travel trailer, in Ohio. We just got 5 inches of snow & the temp outside is now 12 degrees. When I turn on the shower the cold water comes out, but no hot water. I tried turning each on one at a time, but no hot water comes out. I tried the bathroom sink & the kitchen sink and got hot water out of them. Any suggestions on what I should check or do?
Asked by Bright - Thu Dec 6 10:18:39 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you get no water at all from the hot water valve in the shower, the line is probably frozen. Open the access panels on the outside if you can find the water line from the heater, and get some heat to the line to thaw it.

Is there a switch to change from propane to electric on a 06 Montana Mountaineer 5th Wheel?
Q. I have a 2006 Montana Mountaineer 5th Wheel made by Keystone and need to know if there is a switch I can flip to change from propane to electric during the winter months at my house. I have the trailer hooked up to electric power at my house and keep spending more and more money each week to keep the heater running. Thanks for all your help and answers.

what kind of truck do I have to have to tow a 5th wheel?
Q. I want to buy a truck and put a cab cover thing on and wondered if I could use a closed bed truck to tow a 5th wheel or if I have to leave the bed open to connect the 5th wheel. I need a place to store camping gear when it isn't being used.
Asked by madamewitch1106 - Wed Oct 17 21:15:59 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It all Depends on what size Fifth-Wheel you have, If you do not want to go to any expense then don't even think about a short box pickup, Some 1/2 ton trucks can do the trick, depending again on size of 5th wheel. The bed of your truck has to be open as the rails and hitch are attached to your frame. some people have had covers made that go around hitch leaving the pintle open. As far as storage place? Well most 5th wheels come with alot of storage compartments that can be used to store camping gear. I my self would go with a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. And again, depending on size, go with a diesel engine as it has more torque vs. a gas motor.

A. for a 5th wheel trailer your going to need at least a 3/4 ton truck, so like a chevy/gmc silverado 2500HD, ford F250 or a dodge 2500, or could get a 1 ton truck like the chevy/gmc 3500, ford F-350 or a dodge 3500, would be best to get a diesel truck to not a gas, also for clearance issues of the trailer and truck cab you'll need a long bed, also you'll have to mount the 5th wheel right above the axle

A. What year and engine is the truck? I drive a 1996 Cheyenne with a 5.0L V8 and I tow our 24' fifth wheel. Sometimes it stresses the engine a little bit or when I'm driving down through mountains the transmission will get a little hot, but it runs fine.

A. Placing the weight of a trailer hitch at the rear bumper will lift the front end of the vehicle causing steering difficulties if you do not have the suspension set up for it. Think of you vehicle as a see-saw with the rear axle being the fulcrum. Weight behind it will leverage the front end up, thus the steering problem potential, plus the uneven weight distribution on the tires and suspension. A fifth wheel puts the weight where it should be, over the center of the rear axle. This naturally distributes a more evenness of weight and handling is much improved.

Q. that might help. I want to build an open seat 5th wheel trailer to tow my dumb drunk buddies home from the bar behind my VW trike. Thanks I know it is legal to ride as a passenger in CA in a 5Th wheel with direct communication or a visable window, what I am trying to find is a statute # or info as to the trailer set up. I want it to be an open air trailer. We are in Southern California and do not need a top. Thanks again for helpful info

A. go here at bottom of page is a place to email them.. ask your question. I must say, it is a good one. Side cars are a form of trailer and trailers are allowed but to tow passengers? It's not allowed to have passengers in a trailer towed by car or truck.. You got me curious on this one and got yourself a star. Kudos.

What kind of plaster or tools do I need to fix a leak in a tin 5th wheel trailer ceiling.?
Q. I'm living in a 5th whell trailer home in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, I've only been in it a couple weeks and now it's raining. I found out the hard way about a leak just above my bed, and another one a couple feet away. I have no idea how to fix something like this, but I'd like to get it done before it gets worse.

A. Use plastic roof cement to patch the leaking area, then paint the whole roof with mobile home roof coating. The roof coating will prevent future leaks.

How do we move a 5th wheel with the addition built onto it.?
Q. The 5th wheel has the side cut out with the addition built onto it. You can't just use the 5th wheel it cannot be towed at all - there are no wheels or axels. The whole home would have to lifted onto a flat bed to be moved, after probably being split in two. These two units are over 30 years old. We may have to have the entire home salvaged/recylced but are willing to give everything - appliances , gas furnace.water heater etc - to the person who can move the entire thing. There are many parts that could be re-used for what ever your ideas are.

A. Best thing to do is have it demolished in place. Move whatever is valuable out and contact a heavy equipment company to chop and haul it. A garage sale will help you recover some of the 3-500 dollars it will cost.

A. Having towed both a 27' and a 37' travel trailer with an F350, (Powerstroke,) I wouldn't really want to try anything much larger than a 20' with an F150. A friend of mine does it regularly with his F150, but his truck is also a company truck. The fifth wheels that hook to a semi-style connection in the bed of the truck are going to be the massive, heavy travel trailers that are going to put more weight on the truck's suspension and rear axle than a half ton truck is really designed for. It's probably not a good idea to attempt a fifth wheel in anything under a three quarter ton rating. It's not simply a matter of weight, as much as it is of inertia. You have to get the thing moving, which requires a LOT of torque, you need the… [cont.]

A. I'm thinking when the body style changed in '48 or "49 Cadiilac went to a "continentil kit" on the back. The pre war Caddies had spare tires mounted on the front fenders and were called "Phaeton" styling. In the late 50's GM quit putting continental kits on Caddies.

Asked by fletcher - Sat Oct 25 13:06:18 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. unless you have the original specs on the trailer, the only accurate way to know is to take it to a scale and get the gross wt of the trailer while it is unhooked. then put the landing gear on the scale so you know what the hitch weight is. you SHOULD be ok with your F150 but make sure. you don't want to ruin your truck by pulling too heavy a trailer. it also depends on what engine you have. any V8 is good but a six cylinder won't cut it with a trailer of that size. I know that older fifth wheels tended to be much heavier than newer models that have fiberglass instead of metal siding and aluminum frames instead of wood. also, if your use will be only a couple times per year, your truck can handle a little more strain than say, if you were… [cont.]
