What are the major disadvantages of owning a 5th wheel or trailer compared to an RV?
Q. My wife and I are considering full time RVing. We saw a nice new RV for 70,000, than noticed that 5th wheel and trailers, which look about the same are MUCH cheaper. Obviously you have to tow the trailers, but what, if any, are the other disadvantages??? Thank You, Brian.
Asked by streetpreacher1611 - Fri Jun 27 00:44:31 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The biggest disadvantage, as far as I know, is that you're not traveling in your house. You're traveling in a pickup truck. The accommodations in an RV for travel are splendorous compared to a pickup truck. You can take a big crowd along in an RV, and it's huge fun. Not so fun in the pickup. This may not matter to you. It depends on what you're going to do with it. Keep in mind, I'm not saying a motorhome is better - I'm just answering the question that you asked. Motorhomes have a longer list of disadvantages. If I was going to leave my camper parked all the time, I'd rather have a trailer. If I was going to travel all the time, I'd rather have the motorhome.

How big of a travel trailer/5th wheel can a Honda Ridgeline PU [5000 lb tow & 600 lb limit on tongue] pull?
Q. I need to know whether the Honda V6 in the Ridgeline is capable of towing a travel trailer or a 5th wheel?
Asked by Walt F - Wed May 7 16:18:37 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A Ridgeline will not "reliably" tow anything that sleeps more than 4 people as a rule of thumb. A Ridgeline will not tow any 5th wheel trailer at all. Period. No, not even if you take it slow and easy. I have seen a Ridgeline tow a rather large travel trailer before, but it did not look very stable, and it was not up to speed on the highway, so take it for what it is worth. You cannot safely and reliably tow anything that is over 5000 lbs. If you purchase a travel trailer from a dealer, the will not even let you tow it off the lot if the tow vehicle is not rated for the load. Liability and such.

Anyone know the California laws regarding passengers riding in a 5th wheel trailer, or any web sights?
Q. that might help. I want to build an open seat 5th wheel trailer to tow my dumb drunk buddies home from the bar behind my VW trike. Thanks I know it is legal to ride as a passenger in CA in a 5Th wheel with direct communication or a visable window, what I am trying to find is a statute # or info as to the trailer set up. I want it to be an open air trailer. We are in Southern California and do not need a top. Thanks again for helpful info

A. go here at bottom of page is a place to email them.. ask your question. I must say, it is a good one. Side cars are a form of trailer and trailers are allowed but to tow passengers? It's not allowed to have passengers in a trailer towed by car or truck.. You got me curious on this one and got yourself a star. Kudos.

A. 5Th wheel will always be the easiest, because your pivot point is above or ahead of the rear wheels. As soon as you put the pivot point behind the rear wheels it changes the dynamics. Paul

And it's been already a year I'm riding my car and it's still doing well! I've recommended it to my friends and all of them are enjoying their used cars and have no problem with it!

A. If you want the luxury and all the bells, go with Montana. Absolutely gorgeous, plenty of room, lots of slidouts (up to four). I see that EBAY has some decent deal if you don't to buy new. I don't think you will be disappointed at all.

Is it legal to install a fuel tank in a travel trailer or 5th wheel for use with an onboard generator set?
Q. The fuel tank is a legal gas transfer tank. It's the kind that you can install in the bed of a pickup truck, to transfer gasoline. The trailer will not have the generator running when it's being towed. Please, provide a link to the source of your data.

A. short bed i would go get a gooseneck hitch insted and then get a 5th wheel gooseneck coupler insted. if you get a 5th wheel hitch when not in use u r wasting your bed space so if u get a gooseneck hitch B&W has a turn over ball so when not using the hitch you can just flip it over and you can have your bed space back. i just bought a goose neck hitch on monday it was around 360$ and the addapatior is around 300-500$. hope this works for u

Pulling a 5th wheel trailer with a toyota Tacoma 4 wheel off road?
Q. The truck is a 2006 special off road model with 6 speed manual 6 cylinder gas engine. I want to pull a 5ht wheel around 25-26 feet. will this work???
Asked by Ron B - Sun Sep 23 20:29:41 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You might be alright. That's a powerful truck. Just make sure to pay attention to the numbers. 5th wheels pull nicer than bumper-pull trailers. Just stay under the trailer weight capacity of the truck, make sure the hitch is properly installed and the trailer brakes are properly adjusted (and present!) Make sure the weight on the hitch won't exceed the GAWR of the rear axle. I don't think it will but do check.

A. The fifth wheel coupling provides the link between a semi-trailer and the towing truck, tractor unit, leading trailer or dolly. Some recreational vehicles RVs are in a fifth wheel configuration, requiring the coupling to be installed in the bed of a pickup truck as a towing vehicle. The coupling consists of a coupling pin (or king pin) on the front of the semi-trailer and a horseshoe-shaped coupling device called a fifth wheel on the rear of the towing vehicle. Sometimes called a turn-table in Australia and New Zealand, especially if it's a rotating ball-race-bearing type. The term fifth wheel comes from a similar coupling used on four-wheel horse-drawn carriages and wagons. The device allowed the front axle assembly to pivot in the… [cont.]

How to get rid of a 5th wheel?
Q. My roommate and I have two friends who are girls. We have put in all the necessary work, the girls are completely into it, but we cannot get them away from their friend. She is a terrible human being (not just fat and ugly, a complete bitch. No positive qualities in her personality). What is the best way to get her out of the situation?
Asked by The MaleMan - Wed Sep 16 01:29:21 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Are your girlfriends trying to ditch her as well or do they bring her along? If they're trying to get rid of her too, then it's easier. Have them sneak out without clueing/telling her. If not, you have to convince them to join you in this fight. Otherwise, it's not likely to happen. Explain to them how much of a downer this other girl is. Tell them that you really don't like hanging with her. Tell them way. Don't make it sound like you just don't like their friend. Maybe you can talk them into trying to improve her outlook on life.

A. i can say, with experience, due to a stupid salesman, it doesnt work! i work with RVs and seen the attempt at putting a 5th wheel, in a chevy, colarado it was. it was only a 25ft i believe, and it sank the truck to the ground. even IF you fitted airbags or extra leafs, you still have the problem of turning. dont do it, sorry. for one thing, they dont make 5th wheel hitches for most 1/2 tons anyway. for that reason
