A car travels up a hill at a constant speed of 37 km/h and returns down the hill at a constant speed of 64 km/h. Calculate the average speed (in km/h) for the round trip. I tried adding up the speeds and dividing by 2 to get the answer, but that was incorrect. Any insight or hints would be much appreciated. Also, is there a way to determine this without knowing the length of the hill because that was never given to me. Asked by solidus_ash - Thu Sep 10 22:02:09 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. actually the average speed will be lower than 50% b/c it will take longer (time wise) to go up the hill than down. you should know how long the hill is to be able to input all the data correctly. for example, we'll say the hill is 37 km long and so it took 1 hour to drive up it. on the other hand it only took 34.686 [(37/64)60 = 34.686]minutes to drive back down it. your average speed should be 46.892 km/h here's how it worked. you multiply the number of minutes driven by speed which was driven during that time. once for each direction, so 37x60 and 64x34.686 add the two together then divide by the total number of minutes driven, in this case 94.686 minutes. 46.892 average speed.
