In kinematics, the instantaneous speed of an object (denoted v) is the magnitude of its instantaneous velocity (the rate of change of its position); it is thus the scalar equivalent of velocity. The average speed of an object in an interval of time is the distance traveled by the object divided by the duration of the interval; the instantaneous speed is the limit of the average speed as the duration of the time interval approaches zero.

Like velocity, speed has the dimensions of a length divided by a time; the SI unit of speed is the meter per second, but the most usual unit of speed in everyday usage is the kilometer per hour or, in certain countries, the mile per hour.

The fastest possible speed at which energy or information can travel, according to special relativity, is the speed of light in vacuum c = 299,792,458 meters per second, approximately 1079 million kilometers (671 million miles) per hour. Matter cannot quite reach the speed of light, as this would require an infinite amount of energy.

What is the average speed of a round trip on this hill?
Q. A car travels up a hill at a constant speed of 37 km/h and returns down the hill at a constant speed of 64 km/h. Calculate the average speed (in km/h) for the round trip. I tried adding up the speeds and dividing by 2 to get the answer, but that was incorrect. Any insight or hints would be much appreciated. Also, is there a way to determine this without knowing the length of the hill because that was never given to me.

A. actually the average speed will be lower than 50% b/c it will take longer (time wise) to go up the hill than down. you should know how long the hill is to be able to input all the data correctly. for example, we'll say the hill is 37 km long and so it took 1 hour to drive up it. on the other hand it only took 34.686 [(37/64)60 = 34.686]minutes to drive back down it. your average speed should be 46.892 km/h here's how it worked. you multiply the number of minutes driven by speed which was driven during that time. once for each direction, so 37x60 and 64x34.686 add the two together then divide by the total number of minutes driven, in this case 94.686 minutes. 46.892 average speed.

How does internet speed work in regards to downloading and watching streaming video?
Q. I noticed my office computer Local Area Connection Status shows speed: 54.0mbps, while my home computer speed is 100mbps. Yet my office computer (which shows as being slower speed) seems to stream and download larger 1gig or so files faster. How does this work?

A. thats the speed of your network card/adapter not the internet speed. go to www.speedtest.net to find out the speed. Edit_ the 100mb and 54.0MB are the speed at which the computer can communicate with the network/router. the internet speed would be much slower for you, but the office network would have a faster internet.

A. <---boat l .../ l.../ l.../ resulant speed l .../ l.../ \// now just use pythagrian theorem a^2 + b^2 = c^2 15^2 + 30^2 = c^2 now just solve for c hope this helps
